Herculaneum III.12. Shop.

According to Maiuri, this doorway, with its door-keeper’s cubby hole placed in mid-air upon rafters, led by means of a high, steep staircase to the separate apartments on the first and second floors; these lay partly along the main front of the house, partly along the south wing of the atrium.
