Video of the Augusteum 3d model (CD. Basilica) in Herculaneum with frescoes and statues.

The so-called Basilica is a large square paved with marble slabs, edged by porticoes on all sides and with a square exedra in the centre of the bottom side, framed by two lateral apses. In the central Exedra were placed the armoured statue of Titus (MANN, Inv. 6059) and the seated statues of Claudius and Augustus, depicted as Jupiter enthroned (Inv. 6040 and 6056); The lateral apses were decorated with the large paintings of IV Stile depicting the following subjects: the recognition of Telephus by Hercules (Inv. 9008), which is believed to have been derived from the Hercules Aversus by the Greek painter Apelle cited by Pliny the Elder in the temple of Diana On the Aventine Hill; The liberation of the Athenian children at the hands of Theseus (Inv. 9049), the musical education of Olympus at the hands of Marsyas (Inv. 9151) and the musical education of Achilles by Chiron (Inv. 9109). On bases placed in front of the apses were the bronze statues of Augustus (Inv. 5595) and Claudius in heroic nudity (Inv. 5593); Finally, to the decoration of the side porches belonged a frieze illustrating episodes and feats of Hercules' life and a panel with Medea (Inv. 8976). The building also contained a large number of statues of many of members of the Giulio-Claudian and Flavian dynasties. There are many modern hypotheses about the purpose of this building; Among these is the Augusteum, the building used for the imperial cult, whose construction dates back to the age of Claudius, with subsequent updates on the floor of sculptural furnishings.
