We are a retired husband and wife team, Jackie and Bob Dunn based in the UK.
Herculaneum/Ercolano and Pompeii have always intrigued Jackie. She first went there in her teens. Having read many books on the ancient cities, she had found it most confusing when, for example two different books gave a differing location for the same property. Many of the books only contained photos of the same well visited houses. None showed the smaller homes and houses, which seemed ignored but just as interesting. With husband Bob as photographer and web site developer we have built a photographic record indicating all the doorways of houses, shops, temples, workshops, bars and ancient pubs as a way to clear the mystery once and for all and provide a solid base for students, teachers, authors, museums, researchers and all to use for reference.
We will continue to update the site with more photographs from our trips to Herculaneum and from our collaborators. We are also interested in your photographs, paintings and old postcards if they add something different. We would welcome any material from Museums around the world as well as any old photographs. Our aim in this respect is to relocate items with their original home, electronically only of course. Don't worry if you cannot identify the location in your photograph as we have become quite expert in identifying which property it came from.
In using this site you can see Herculaneum as it really is and explore parts that are closed to the public. We are sure you will enjoy your virtual trip to Herculaneum.
Email us with the details of your query, giving as much information as possible, and we will do our best to point you to a solution or to suitable resources.
Send us any photographs you would like identifying.
We also have our large library of books on Herculaneum/Ercolano and Pompeii to consult.
We have high resolution copies of all the pictures on HerculaneuminPictures which we can examine in detail or can provide them for non commercial use.
This is all free for students and lovers of Herculaneum/Ercolano and Pompeii like us.
We are particularly interested in any pictures that add new views or information to the site or show features no longer in existence or provide a comparison with how a particular part of the site used to look.
This could include any photographs of items no longer in situ or houses no longer open.
Format should be JPG with little or no compression.
Resolution should be as high as possible in order to allow us to use zoom to match features if we need to identify where they are in Herculaneum/Ercolano.
If possible please let us know as much information as you can on
- Approximately when they were taken
- Where you think they are located in Herculaneum
- The insula.house number if you know it or, if not, then as much as you do know.
- Confirmation that you own the copyright
- Your agreement that we can publish them on the site.
