Herculaneum IV.14. Taberna vasaria.

Excavated 1931-32.

According to Maiuri, this shop was wedged with its two floors into the edifice, and between the doorways of numbers IV. 12-13 and IV. 15-16.  Perhaps, it belonged to a wine merchant rather than the caupona of a small retailer judging by the large number of amphorae found there.

See Maiuri, Amedeo, (1977). Herculaneum. 7th English ed, of Guide books to the Museums Galleries and Monuments of Italy, No.53 (p.58).

According to Pesando and Guidobaldi, this contained a latrine in its south-west corner and had modest lodgings on a mezzo floor (pergola), The finding of numerous wine amphorae, all of the same type, has led to the interpretation of this being a “Taberna vasaria”, which was used for the sale of amphorae and other clay/terracotta equipment.

See Pesando, F. and Guidobaldi, M.P. (2006). Pompei, Oplontis, Ercolano, Stabiae. Editori Laterza, (p.337)

Camardo and Notomista wrote that 18 amphorae were found here leaning against the east wall. The latrine which was found was one of the better preserved in Herculaneum.
