According to Maiuri, this workshop was perhaps a dye-works, with a furnace placed between two big counters.

Guidobaldi wrote that this was a “Tintoria”, a place for cleaning the wool.

The doorway on the left is to the latrine. The doorway on the right, leads into an area under the stairs at Ins. Or. II.17.
These stairs, according to Maiuri, would have been carved out from an area of this room giving access both to the elevated upper floor rooms on the terrace of the Cryptoporticus, as well as to those looking onto the eastern façade of the Palaestra.
