Herculaneum V.6. Bottega di Nettuno e Anfitrite. Wine/food shop, linked to V.7.

Excavated 1932-34.

Lower floor      Upper floor

This large shop is on the south side of the entrance doorway to the house and has a doorway in its rear east wall leading into one of the rooms at the side of the atrium.

According to Maiuri, this is the best preserved of all the hundreds of shops discovered both here and at Pompeii.

It gives an excellent idea of what a classical-age shop would have been like.

On the large counter near the entrance, the shop-fittings and goods of the last day and hours of business, still lay.

Inside on the shelves, were the wine amphorae, in upright and lying positions according to their requirements – some being sold full, other emptied in the shop.

Behind the counter was a sort of wooden partition with a close grating.

See Maiuri, Amedeo, (1977). Herculaneum. 7th English ed, of Guide books to the Museums Galleries and Monuments of Italy, No.53 (p.43).

According to Wallace-Hadrill, this was a wine shop with well-preserved counter and amphora rack, back room separated by wooden partition giving upper storage space.

Upper apartment with balcony, kitchen and 2 living rooms, both with Style III/IV decoration, including inserted mythological panel, accessible from stairs in back room reached from shop or atrium of main house.
