Looking south across peristyle towards two doorways to rooms 16 and 17.
Both with large windows with marble-sills and low ceiling which divided them into an antechamber and an alcove.
These doorways were under the loggia of the upper floor rooms.
Holes for the support beams of the flooring can be seen on the upper left.
According to Maiuri, on the southern side there are two beautiful cubicula; the little vaults preserve all the ornamental motives plainly painted.
See Maiuri, Amedeo, (1977). Herculaneum. 7th English ed, of Guide books to the Museums Galleries and Monuments of Italy, No.53 (p.40).
According to Guidobaldi and Esposito, these are described as day rooms, a place for rest.

VI.13 Herculaneum, May 2006. Room 16, looking south across mosaic flooring.
According to Guidobaldi and Esposito, the wall paintings in this part of the house were particularly refined, with a neutral colour scheme that harmonised with the mosaic floors, which were plain white with a double band of black, except in the peristyle, where the scheme was reversed, and a regular stippling of white tesserae was introduced.
